EIGHTEEN

“And this is the only bathroom,” Hannah pointed out as she debated if her sanity had finally snapped. All through dinner Murph wouldn’t stop hounding her for him to stay over, just to make sure she stayed safe. She knew better. He wanted in her pants, not her house. He’d have to settle for the house, since getting into her pants would never happen.

“It’s very girly.”

“Because I’m a girl.” She turned off the light and pointed at the door directly across the hall. “That’s where you’ll be.”

To her shock, he didn’t argue as he opened the door and dropped his bag onto the bed. “It’ll work. What’s for dessert?”

“Do you want to sleep in your car?”

“Ah come on, Gracie Jean. That’s cold.”

She smiled and shrugged as she walked away, leaving him standing in the hallway. Moses watched his every move, clearly unsure whether to trust the newest occupant of the house. When she moved into the kitchen, Moses ran in after her, his little bell dinging.

“You know, bells around cat’s necks make them insane.”

“So does having a houseguest critiquing my cat’s collar.”

“Touché.” He went to the fridge. After scanning the contents, he helped himself to an apple. “You really need to get some beer.”

Did all guys drink beer? She had no idea how to deal with having him here. She’d never so much as had a sleepover, let alone one with a guy. “If you want beer, you can drink it at your place.”

“Or, I could just bring some over.”

“I only agreed to this to shut you up. Don’t make me regret it.”

He laughed and bit into his apple. “You won’t even know I’m here.”

She somehow doubted that. Sure, they’d spent endless hours on stakeouts in her car. Having him inside her house, her personal space, was something entirely different. Did he expect her to entertain him? What did that even mean? She was seriously outside her comfort zone here. Not knowing what else to do, she ran away. “I’m going to change.”

“Into something more comfortable?”

“Into something less SBI,” she threw back and moved down the hall, closing her bedroom door behind her. Once she had on her fuzzy peace sign PJs and long-sleeved t-shirt, she padded into the living room. Murph had Moses on his chest and talked to him as he petted him. Moses didn’t like anyone but her. And he barely liked her. How did Murph get her cranky cat to drool on his chest like that?

She’d always believed animals had a sixth sense about them. Her father used to tell her the same. “If your animal doesn’t approve of the person, neither should you.”

Oh, how she missed her father. Every day.

With a deep breath to push her memory out of her mind, she approached. “You know, if you keep doing that he’ll never let you leave.”

“Animals like me. It’s a gift.” He made kissing noises at the cat, which made her laugh.

“I’ll bet.” She grabbed her book and curled her feet under her as she sat. After opening the novel, she settled in.
